Ave Maria

Duration: 5 minutes

Date: 1984

ORIANA

Information

This short, simple, setting of the “Ave Maria” was written in the Summer of 1982, while I was a first-year undergraduate, as a response to the death, at the age of 23, of my friend Terry Sherriff, principal cornet of the BSC [Port Talbot] Brass Band.

Written during the course of one afternoon, this setting seeks to capture, in some small part, the essence of Terry’s beautifully lyrical cornet playing.

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and in the hour of our death. Amen.
