CHRISTOPHER PAINTER (b. 1962)
Christopher Painter is a Welsh composer whose work embraces orchestra, wind orchestra, brass band, chamber music, voices and solo instruments. His music is distinguished by vivid instrumental colour, a strong sense of atmosphere, and an affinity with landscape, literature, and memory. These qualities have found expression in works ranging from the orchestral landscapes of Forest of Dreams and the song cycle Furnace of Colours to music for the distinctive traditions of the brass and wind band worlds.
Born in Port Talbot in 1962, Painter studied music at University College, Cardiff. His early composition teachers were Timothy Taylor and Richard Elfyn Jones; in 1984 he began an important and enduring association with Alun Hoddinott, studying with him full-time until 1989 and continuing to benefit from his guidance over many years. His development was complemented by consultations and masterclasses with Samuel Adler, George Benjamin, Edward Gregson, John McCabe, Robert Simpson and Marek Stachowski. He also studied conducting with Edward Gregson, Stanley Saunders and Rod Walker, and subsequently with Christopher Adey and Alun Francis.
Painter’s early recognition included the Afan Thomas Composer’s Award, the Welsh Arts Council’s Young Welsh Composer Forum and the National Eisteddfod Composition Prize. In 1997, he received the Gregynog Composers' Award of Wales. He twice won the National Eisteddfod’s Tlws y Cerddor: in 2005 for the chamber work Yr Hanes Swynol (A History of Charms) and in 2010 for Syniadau’r Serch (Thoughts on Love), a song cycle for baritone, violin and harp. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2003.
Appointments and residencies have played an important part in his work. As Composer-in-Association with Ensemble Cymru, he wrote several pieces for the ensemble, including Yggdrasil, a children’s dance work commissioned through the Millennium Commission and Techniquest for the Sounds for Science project. In 1999 he was Composer-in-Residence with both the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.
His first commission for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, Invisible Cities, received four performances and was subsequently issued on CD by the orchestra. He returned to work with the NYOW in 2014, when it commissioned and premiered Bugles Sang, written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. His association with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales produced the substantial Ceremonies of Fire, conducted by James Watson.
From 2005 to 2006 Painter was Composer-in-Residence with the Thüringen Philharmonie in Gotha, Germany. The residency culminated in Forest of Dreams, premiered under Alun Francis and broadcast on German television. The work received its British premiere in 2009 from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Jac van Steen.
Other major orchestral works include Symphony No. 3, 'Fire in the Snow', premiered in Mexico City in 2010 by the Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM under Alun Francis and broadcast on Mexican television. In 2011, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, soprano Claire Booth, and Jac van Steen gave the premiere of Furnace of Colours, which was subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
His chamber and solo music has similarly attracted distinguished performers. The Lunar Saxophone Quartet toured Lunar Seas and recorded it for Signum Classics; the same label had previously released his Sonata for Alto Saxophone, commissioned by Lara James. His catalogue also includes music for clarinet, harp, strings, brass and mixed ensembles, alongside vocal and choral works.
Painter’s close relationship with the brass-band tradition has produced works including Ceremonies of Fire, The Elephant and the Dove, Lednor Variants, Myrkviðr (Mirkwood), and The Petrified Falcon. His wind orchestra music forms another substantial part of his output and reflects a lifelong engagement with wind and brass playing.
Alongside composition, Painter has worked extensively as a conductor, teacher, editor, copyist, publisher and orchestral librarian. He taught composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and served as Secretary of the Welsh Music Guild and as music librarian of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. His editorial work has included preparing and publishing important Welsh repertoire, particularly music by Alun Hoddinott, Arwel Hughes and Grace Williams.
He lives in Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan and devotes his time to composition, editing and publishing. Oriana Publications, Maecenas Music, Arcomis and Vanderbeek & Imrie publish his music.
