This work is written in memory of my friend, and band travelling companion, Christopher Lednor.

After a long career as a musician in the British Army (both regular and territorial), Chris joined the RAF StAthan Voluntary Band and also sang, for a while, in a local male voice choir. He once told me that "Gwahoddiad" was one of his favourite pieces, so it seemed appropriate to base this work on elements from the tune. It is called "Variants" rather than "Variations" as it is not chained to the tune but takes elements of it as the starting point for its various sections (apart from one full statement of the hymn in tribute to my friend).
