Landscapes
Duration: 10 minutes
Opus: 22
Date: 1987
VANDERBEEK
Information
The original inspiration for this work came to me after reading T.S. Eliot's "Landscapes" during a journey through mid-Wales and a stay at Lake Vyrnwy. Shortly after this, I became very interested in the paintings of the American artist, Lyonel Feininger whose synthesis of expressionism and cubism greatly appealed to me. These two influences provided the foundation for these musical landscapes which are meant to evoke the natural landscapes and atmosphere of Wales, rather in the sense of impressionist postcards than of depictions of any particular places.
Dedicated to Clifford Bunford, Head of Practical Studies at University College Cardiff, on the occasion of his retirement.
